How to Store Calligraphy and Painting Collections During the Rainy Season

The rainy season is characterized by high temperatures, frequent heavy rains, and humid, muggy air. Such warm and moist conditions are ideal for the growth and reproduction of various molds, which is highly detrimental to the preservation of calligraphy and paintings. These artworks are typically created on paper or silk, both of which are favored by pests. During the rainy season, when the temperature and humidity are just right, pests and molds multiply rapidly, causing damage to the artworks.

Before the rainy season arrives, it is essential to store the calligraphy and paintings properly. Prior to storage, ensure thorough ventilation and drying. Then, tightly roll them up and place them in sealed painting cases. For unmounted works, you can make a vacuum-sealed plastic bag with a zipper. Roll up the calligraphy or painting and put it in the bag. After three to four months, take it out and spread it out to dry in a place not directly exposed to sunlight. The cabinets or boxes used for storing calligraphy and paintings must be well sealed. Place a few pieces of camphor in each corner of the box. It is advisable to wrap the calligraphy and paintings in kraft paper for storage. During days of high humidity, do not open the boxes or cabinets, and avoid unrolling the calligraphy and paintings. For newly mounted calligraphy and paintings, do not roll them up immediately for storage. Instead, hang them first to allow the moisture to dissipate before storing. If they are rolled up immediately after mounting, the paste may not dry properly, leading to mold spots on the surface that are difficult to remove. Unmounted calligraphy and paintings can be folded and stored in homemade plastic bags when the weather is dry.

The study should be well-ventilated to keep the temperature low. To prevent pests from settling and multiplying, books should be moved frequently. For those with a large collection of books, a thorough cleaning should be conducted at the end of spring or autumn each year. Place 1 to 2 pieces of camphor in each layer of the bookcase to prevent pests. As an extra precaution, you can seal the book storage area before the rainy season and ventilate it to dry after the rainy season. It is important to prevent the books from getting damp and moldy while also avoiding direct exposure to the sun, which can cause the paper to discolor and become brittle.
