How to make the draft and how to mount the paper for detailed painting

Since the familiar paper or silk is difficult to modify, for detailed paintings, it is usually done as follows: first, draw the sketch on the drawing paper, then copy it onto the familiar rice paper or silk to draw the final draft. The steps are:

(1) Choose the paper or silk, cut it larger than the sketch by one or two centimeters on all sides. Prepare it for applying glue or paste when mounting the paper.

(2) Place the sketch under the familiar paper or silk, use an HB pencil to lightly copy the sketch, the outline should be clearly drawn, and the pen marks should not be too heavy, so as not to press down the pencil lines left by the copy when drawing the ink lines.

(3) Find a piece of ordinary white paper that is the same size as the sketch, use it as a backing paper. Since the familiar paper or silk is generally very thin and semi-transparent, using a white paper underneath makes it easier to see the effect of the picture when painting. Wet the backing paper and let it fully expand, then use glue or paste to stick it onto the drawing board. (4) After the backing paper dries, place the copied original on top and spray the paper with a nozzle or a spray bottle to wet it. Wait until the paper fully expands and then apply one to two centimeters of glue or paste to the backside of the drawing paper on all four sides to secure it firmly. Once it is dry, you can start drawing.
